Connected Car PC Technology

Intel transports the car into the future.
Intel has taken the PC technology we use in our homes and offices and extended it into our cars.  Now drivers and passengers can get a lot more function and utility from their vehicles.  By combining the power of PC architecture with widely accepted technologies of today, Intel’s Connected Car PC technology provides for the use of an assortment of in-vehicle tools and conveniences, including real-time information, communications, navigation, entertainment and security.

With Connected Car PC technology, drivers can take advantage of numerous communications and computing functions without taking their eyes off the road, or their hands off the wheel. Thanks to voice activated technology, drivers can interact verbally with the in-car computer in complete safety.  Simply tell the computer what information or computing functions you want, and the computer responds.  When you  ask for directions, the fastest route to a destination will be mapped out on a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), using a satellite network called a Global Positioning System (GPS) that can pinpoint your current location.  A text-to-speech converter can read your incoming e-mail and enable you to dictate a response.  Up-to-the minute news, weather and traffic reports can be made available through the Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS).  Information on tourism, stocks, local entertainment, products, services, and much more can be downloaded from the Internet.  Even home security systems can be monitored and operated from the car — all through voice commands.
At the same time, passengers can experience an extended multimedia environment.  For example, they can be entertained by a movie on a Digital Versatile Disk (DVD), the clearest video picture available, played on a full-color LCD with Dolby Surround Sound Stereo.  Or they can play any of the popular 3D multimedia games available on CD-ROM.
In addition, the Connected Car PC technology can be used to report accidents, call for road-side assistance, remotely identify both the car and driver to police, track stolen vehicles and provide sophisticated anti-theft protection.
Connected Car PC technology will drive the future of automotive options, but the technology is already here.  Developers have already initiated this rapidly expanding segment by integrating the PC platform with recent advances in technology.  These include: new multimedia expansion such as Intel MMX™ technology and Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) which enable PCs to provide a realistic media experience.  Wireless communications technologies, such as GPS, RDBS, and Mobile Internet access provide a wide assortment of "connections" for Connected Car PC technology.  The latest plug-and-play connectivity technology such as the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and 1394 allows easy installation and operation of standard, widely available peripherals.
Best of all, the leader in Connected Car PC technology is the number one name behind all PCs, Intel.  Intel is actively working with leaders in automotive, computer, consumer electronics, and communications industries to develop Pentium® processor-based computing platforms that will provide an automotive environment that is safe, informative, productive, and fun.
